I was originally drawn to this story because the premise seemed similar to my own short story, Latitude Adjustment: an American in a foreign land dealing with the consequences of a dalliance with one of the locals, plus the cover picture seemed to suggest a jungle setting. Leaving Panama was not exactly as I expected, though I found myself taken in by the way it was written, with the main character's story being told within the context of his interactions between the secondary characters. All in all, an interesting, well written read. I'll be looking forward to more by this author. - Ken Wallin, author of Falling to Eden.Product details

Leaving Panama A Short Story edition by Russ Melrose Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A story about a young soldier's moral dilemma. His name is Hicks and he's gotten a young Panamanian girl pregnant. He decides there is nothing he can really do about it, yet he's swimming in guilt. So, before he leaves Panama, he concocts an elaborate plan to punish himself, hoping to relieve the overwhelming guilt he's feeling. A well-written interesting tale.
Its been awhile since I got into a story that much, the author knows people and how to create a scene.
I enjoyed this short story very much. I really found myself feeling sorry for Hicks. I imagine this scenerio played out in every country that has ever been occupied by a foreign military. I look forward to this authors first novel.
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this short story by an author that I had never heard of before but I was pleasantly surprised. I was taken by it right away. I think this could be written into a novel and it would be a wonderful story. I'll be reading more by this author.
