Sea of Lies is terrific. I'm a huge fan of Tom Clancy, but this story is faster paced than Clancy's novels, which makes it a true page turner. And I was very impressed with West's technical knowledge of IT, security, and weapons, including nuclear programs. Can't wait for the sequel!Product details

Ambitious and fun with a page-turning plot and realistic, multi-dimensional characters. Credible as alternative history. I score the author's portion five stars upon five. Only three stars for the editing which resulted in a final product with 20 to 30 per cent too many pages. My sense is that the editors focused on the details - for instance, preventing typo's; ensuring that the prose reads well at a sentence and paragraph-level. On the other hand, according to me, the editing missed the big picture of slimming the narrative down to a less daunting 450-500 pages.
There may be no hard-and-fast rule about book-length for stories in the international conspiracy-thriller genre. By comparison though, Barry Eisler's John Rain books tend to be 300-400 pages; Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon books are a bit longer at 400-450 pages; even classics like Frederick Forsythe's Day of the Jackal, Fourth Protocol, etc. top-out below 450 pages.
If this book were a male-athlete I would describe him as impressively strong but flabby and out-of-shape. Dropping back to playing-weight would preserve strength while increasing quickness, agility and athleticism.
The core of Sea of Lies is fine. The editing challenge lies in the considerable extraneous context. On a macro-level, there are simply too many of what I call "fun facts to know and tell" that aren't strictly necessary to advancing the narrative. At a micro-level, the author over-uses his strength of providing colour. Because adding too much of anything is . . . well, simply too much.
Using a colouring-book analogy, the author could have done a brilliant job already with just the standard 8-pack of Crayola Crayons. But the temptation of having the deluxe 64-colours package resulted in way too many adjectives and adverbs. Creatively and inventively used in many cases, sure. But if the language is a contest, then winning means writing much more tightly. Less can be more!
Closing the way that I began, I scored the writing 5-stars. Brad West is a writing talent and I look forward to reading more from him. My concern is that the physical size (paper-back) and overall length (all genres including e-books) of Sea of Lies may scare off casual impulse buyers. Those are the sort of reader who grabs a book to read on the flight from the departure-terminal book-kiosk.
Mr. West's years mis-spent as a financial analyst in the east whiffs through the narrative as he disobeys his own dictums over pyramidical story structures that he force fed his juniors for years. But then, this book is not about earning per shares or net asset values, even though he sneaks in a head ware with the name of a certain financial institution and a driver named Chanakya with heavy disregard for traffic niceties who also happens to be a financial analyst. Aja Fernando, the tall sniper, in real life would probably be a financial whizz known for his accurate aim over bloodless investments.
The structure suggests a series to follow as Bradley leaves some glaring pieces of the overall puzzle off the table. In real life, the Cage still continues to operate in the boondocks of Australia, the President of Sri Lanka and his brother the Defence Secretary are no longer in the business of pandering the Chinese mandarins in return for the bitcoins that China ensured a steady supply while the mystery of the airplane and the fate of its passengers continues to be a mystery - albeit one that definitely has a twinge of conspiracy thrown in.
And I spent some fruitless hours trying to locate the fifth floor unit in Orchard Road...
Put your seatbelt on for this one. It goes and goes and goes. And no pit stop for a breather. I’d’ve never thought it possible to supercharge a bunch of staid government agencies with this much drama and excitement. Some advice, though Best to fuel up with gingko biloba before reading this novel, because coping with the roster of names and agencies is like memorizing a government telephone directory. The steady action and the byzantine plot twists, however, made the memory work worthwhile. The author has a remarkably smooth familiarity with government organization, operations and vernacular that really makes you wonder about his background. But I suppose that can all be put down to refined author skills and excellent research methods. Anyway, if you’re an espionage addict like I am, you should definitely read this one.
Humdinger of a story that would make a great movie with some serious editing. The author weaves a tale around the disappearance of flight MH370 that is still unsolved; but, interestingly, supposes that the plane was landed in a controlled descent so as not to crash and have strewn parts that could be easily floated and identify the location. A leading crash investigator stated today (coincidentally) that the "Recovered wing section suggests missing Malaysia Airlines flight was 'guided into the ocean in a controlled landing'" giving credence to the author's research and imagination.
Although the plane's disappearance is the anchor, the story goes off in many sub-plots involving most of our clandestine services with a smattering of support from other services with sex, violence, intrigue; and duplicity throughout. A short war with China adds to the suspense. The leading character, Bob Nolan, is an innocuous 50 plus year old intelligence analyst nearing retirement that manages to stay just one step away from catastrophe as the plot swirls around him.
This will keep you up at night, but you can't finish it in one read so space it out and enjoy all the twists and turns.
